Critical Mass
I've been thinking about this for a long time: where is critical mass? My sister is going through a difficult time -- please remember her in your thoughts and prayers -- and it got me to thinking. In government, in our personal lives, where is the line? When do we just stop, stand stock still, and say, "Here I stand; I will go no further?"
I have heard it said that it is a personal choice. That no one else can tell you what is personal or governmental tyranny. That may be. However, as I was explaining to the kids, some things are only effective if there is a common effort. One voice in solo is beautiful. A chorus of voices, even singing in unison, is breathtaking. Noticeable.
I believe there are two facets to finding that line and holding it. Firstly, education. I'm not talking about facts and figures. I'm talking about the ability to reason something out, to discuss it rationally, and to make an informed choice. That choice may change in later life when the information or reasoning changes, but finding a solid ground on which to stand is an integral first step.
Secondly, unity is important. Unison is not unity. Unison is when everyone steps exactly the same, believes exactly the same, and brooks no dissent, even within their own ranks. Unison is dangerous. It calls people to for into a mold designed for one person - if not a completely unreasonable mold to begin with. Unity is different. It is like a well-oiled machine, each part moving in a different way - some even moving in the exact opposite way of parts nearby -- but still all working toward one single point. The rhythm of a working machine is comforting. It is doing what we expect.
So, if you find yourself nearing critical mass, sit down. Really reason it out. Get good counsel. If you find the tyranny worth casting off, unite with those of like mind. But remember: freedom from tyranny is expensive. Historically, it has cost lives, fortunes, and sacred honor.
Yet.. Vive la libertè.
